// Departed Glories is Geir Jenssen’s elegy for a Polish medieval queen who was caught in the throes of the Nazis uprising in WWII. Through an imagined history of psychological trauma, Jenssen created the music the queen may have heard running through her mind during this time of hiding. By manipulating and reconstructing samples of Eastern European and Russian folk music, the album’s ghostly passages emerged, sounding as though freed from history’s woodwork. How these pieces hang together despite their austerity is a quality of this music either undervalued or overlooked by critics upon its initial release. What this lowly listener hears is a mystifying yet deeply satisfying collection.
